I think I've read at least part of Invisible cities, because I think I remember this vignette that you're talking about. Is this the one about the ship out in the harbor he wants to return to and the picture, etc... with like quasi-roman imagery or am I think of something else? Anyhow, I remember loving it. Another, less obtuse, super boring but ridiculously brilliant book about the strangeness of place is "The Enigma of Arrival" by VS Naipaul. I read it recently and it blew me away.

Re: Beck: Modern Guilt (and thoughts on going mp3-legit)

I call myself a Beck fan, but I keep going back and forth on this album. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm craving any of these songs like little midnight snacks that I can taste in my mouth. Maybe this album will grow on me yet.

Re: Hi and a great read

Tish - I just ordered this book for Kate based on your rec. The first couple of listens were throw-aways, but most recently I was forced to marvel at how talented Beck is across a range of genres. Definitely hints of Sea Change (which has been in rotation recently), but with an almost Tom Waits-ian panache.

Re: "Therefore, there are patterns, everywhere in nature."

THIS is my favorite posting so far. see also:

http://www.miqel.com/fracta...

Re: simply cool

Wow.
